# When a Customer Asks for the Best, a Machine Answers

By [Chris Abraham](https://gerriscorp.com/about/) · Published October 23, 2026

Somebody in your service area is, right now, asking Google a question like "best [your trade] near me" or "who should I call for [your service]." A year ago they got a list of businesses and made their own shortlist. Today they get a written answer: two or three names, a sentence about each, and a recommendation. If your name is not in that paragraph, you were never in the running, and no amount of scrolling changes it, because most people never scroll.

This is not a prediction. Search Engine Land, reporting Semrush's tracking data, found that Google's AI Overviews appeared for 88% of commercial keywords in August 2026, nearly double their share in September 2025. Of the five search types Semrush studied, review searches—exactly the "best," "top-rated," and "near me" questions above—moved the furthest. The searches that end in a phone call are the searches the machines took over first.

## What the answer says about a business nobody is tending

An AI answer is only as good as the record it is built from: your website, your Google Business Profile, your listings, and your reviews, reconciled by a system that cannot call you to check. When that record is untended, the answer does not come back blank. It comes back wrong, in predictable ways:
- **It names a competitor** whose facts happen to agree with each other across sources, because agreement is what the system reads as truth.
- **It describes the business you used to be**—services you dropped, a location you closed, hours you changed—because old listings never die on their own.
- **It blends you with somebody else**: a similarly named business across town or across the country, your details and theirs averaged into a company that does not exist.
- **It leaves you out entirely** on the searches that carry the most money, while happily citing you for trivia.

None of this requires an enemy or a glitch. It is what an untended record produces, automatically, every day.

## Why service businesses sit in the blast radius

Review and recommendation searches are buying searches. The person asking has a problem, a budget, and a short afternoon. The machine's paragraph is not the top of their research; for most of them it is the whole of it. A business can have loyal customers, strong reviews, and a good website, and still lose that customer before the first click, because the answer was assembled from a profile nobody has opened in three years and a directory listing nobody claimed.

The good news is that the same mechanism cuts the other way. The answer rewards the business whose record is consistent, complete, and claimed. That is work. It is also, for once, work a smaller business can finish before a bigger competitor bothers to start.

## What Gerris does about it

**The AI Visibility Audit—$750 flat.** We run your money searches through Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, and document what the answers say: where you are named, where you are missing, where you are described wrongly, and where a competitor stands in your place. We check your name, address, and phone consistency across your site, your Google Business Profile, and your listings. You receive a written report, fixes in priority order, yours to keep whoever does the work.

**The Claim Sprint—$1,500 flat.** We fix the layer the audit exposes: the technical foundation (crawl, Search Console, titles, broken links) and the claim layer (entity schema, llms.txt, a canonical page that states what your business is, FAQ schema), so the machines can quote you instead of reconstructing you. Items that belong with your developers come back as a precise written fix list.

**AI Presence, Measured—$500/month.** Answers drift. We re-run your search set monthly and deliver a written receipt: what changed, what the answers say now, and what gets fixed next.

## Your Google Business Profile is doing more talking than you think

For local and service businesses, the Google Business Profile is one of the primary sources the AI answers are built from. A suspended profile, a duplicate listing, a wrong service area, or a category that undersells you does not stay a maps problem; it propagates into every answer the machines give about you. Gerris's profile work—service-area configuration, reinstatement support, and cleanup—is run under the same direction as our search work for one reason: your profile, your website, and your listings have to tell one story, because one story is what the machines believe.

## Start with the audit

You do not need to guess what the machines say about your business, and you do not need a retainer to find out. Start with the $750 audit, read it, and decide from evidence. **[Contact Gerris](https://gerriscorp.com/contact/) to start with the audit.**
