Chris Abraham, Founder & Principal Consultant
Gerris is the brainchild of Chris Abraham, recognized master of blogger outreach, social media strategy, content marketing, digital PR, online reputation management, and search engine optimization.
A pioneer in online social networks and publishing, with a natural facility for anticipating the next big thing, Chris is an Internet analyst, web strategy consultant, and advisor to the industries' leading firms.
He specializes in Web 2.0 technologies, including content syndication, search engine optimization (SEO), online reputation management (ORM), content marketing, online collaboration, business development, blogging, and consumer-generated media.
While in his early 40s, Chris has been online since he was 13 years old. Chris Abraham has been a professional digital strategist since 1993, offering technology consulting from the beginning: Internet and strategy and online engagement from the mid-90s; blogging strategy since 1999; new media marketing, online brand promotion and protection; reputation management, and search strategy since 2002; social media marketing strategy since 2004; online media strategy since 2005; email marketing strategy since 2006; and digital PR and blogger outreach and engagement strategy since 2007.
Thanks to the rich education of bulletin board systems (BBS) in the early 80s through to his growing up on virtual online communities such as ArtsWire, The Meta Network (tmn.com), The WELL, and Howard Rheingold's Brainstorms, Chris Abraham has lived a lot of his real live in the virtual world.
Chris Abraham's passion for and commitment to the medium are what bring life to Gerris digital. Chris' knowledge of the online space is intimate and complete, his respect for community, its culture and norms, is why Gerris digital is able to reach deeper into the conversation than any other agency anywhere.
The name Gerris comes from Chris Abraham's admiration of what is commonly called water striders, water bugs, magic bugs, pond skaters, skaters, skimmers, water scooters, water skaters, water skeeters, water skimmers, water skippers, water spiders, or Jesus bugs. Gerris is the Genus of these aquatic insects, under the Family Gerridae. It's that delicate insect that skates upon the water tension on calm rivers, eddies, and ponds. Chris rowed in college and is a sculler on the Potomac so the balance, skill, and mastery that's required to move quickly, efficiently, elegantly while neither causing ripples nor falling in and getting wet is what Chris admires the most.
And, as it is a Latin name (Binomial nomenclature), I have followed form: Gerris is capitalized while the Species, be it Gerris lacustris, Gerris remigis, Gerris digital, Gerris social, Gerris marketing, Gerris search, or Gerris reputation, is always lower-case.
Which basically means that Chris Abraham is a total nerd and cares about this ephemera, which indeed bodes well for his bona fides.
Chris Abraham was named a Top 50 Social Media Power Influencer by Forbes, #1 PR2.0 Influencer by Traackr, and a top 10 social media influencers by Marketwire. He has a Klout score of 78, a PeerIndex score of 77, X Facebook friends, and X Twitter followers.
Chris is Principal Consultant of Gerris Corp, a digital agency focused on social media marketing, digital PR, blogger outreach, technology and social media strategy, online engagement, SEO, and ORM.
Chris is currently Director of Social Media at Unison agency, where he is expanding their social media offerings by executing a comprehensive, strategic social media marketing plan. Chris was hired by Reputation.com for both his sales acumen and because he was an early adopter of SEO and ORM--developing his brand promotion and protection skills as a Technology Strategist at New Media Strategies.
Prior to Reputation.com, Chris ran his own digital PR and marketing company, Abraham Harrison, LLC, from Washington, DC, Portland, Oregon, and Berlin, Germany, with clients including: Kimberly Clark, The Daily, Habitat for Humanity, Greenpeace, The Fresh Air Fund, International Medical Corps, Sharp, Pew, and the Alzheimer’s Association. Services included digital PR, social media marketing, blogger outreach & engagement, SEO, and ORM. In addition to writing regular articles and blog posts for the Huffington Post, Biznology.com, Socialmedia.biz, and Business2Community.com, Chris maintains his own blog, ChrisAbraham.com. Chris has also written for AdAge’s DigitalNext and Global Idea Network blogs as well as for the Rosetta Stone blog. In addition, he is the go-to expert on social media, citizen journalism, technology, and the Internet for BBC World Service, CNN Radio, and CNet's BNet.
Community is important to Chris, and as such, he acts as a sous chef dining room captain at Miriam’s Kitchen, a local soup kitchen in Washington, DC. In addition, he also does pro-bono blogger outreach and social media consulting for Miriam’s Kitchen.
Chris received his BA in American Literature from The George Washington University. He studied American Literature at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England; French at the University of Hawaii; and German at both the Washington and Berlin Goethe-Instituts.
Why the Agency is Called Gerris
Gerris earned its name from the Gerris lacustris, commonly known as the common pond skater or common water strider. The name was chosen by Chris Abraham, founder of Gerris digital, because he was inspired by the lightness of being exhibited by the pond skaters he sculled with in Washington as they skim along weightless on water tension, never breaking through the Potomac's meniscus.
And, in honor of the company being named after a small insect's Genus, we have also named the company Gerris digital, with the second name, digital, the species, being lower-case. Such as Gerris search, Gerris outreach, Gerris engagement, Gerris social, and its parent company, Gerris corp.
